Dr. Somia Tasneem is a dynamic scholar, experienced academic, and dedicated researcher with a strong interest in parliamentary democracy, youth engagement in democratic processes, and cross-cultural studies. She earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and served as an Assistant Professor of History at Government College University, Faisalabad (GCUF), Pakistan, where she was awarded a Gold Medal in recognition of her outstanding academic performance.
At GCUF, Dr. Tasneem taught a broad range of subjects, including Pakistan’s political and constitutional history, British political history in India, foreign policy analysis, and the role of international organizations in promoting democratic values and global cooperation. In recognition of her commitment to teaching and learning excellence, she was recognized as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA), UK, in 2022. Her research expertise spans both quantitative and qualitative methods, with a particular focus on democratic participation and cross-cultural studies. She has presented her work at national and international conferences, successfully supervised graduate and postgraduate research, and contributed to research capacity-building through roles such as Thesis Submission Coordinator and Internal Examination Coordinator.
She has collaborated with scholars on the Muslim Diversity Study (MDS), part of the New Zealand Attitudes and Values Study (NZAVS). Additionally, her recent collaborative research employs mixed methods to explore the identity, lived experiences, and social integration of Muslim immigrants in New Zealand, analyzing changes in belonging and participation over decades.
Dr. Tasneem’s academic journey reflects a strong commitment to research excellence and innovative, cross-cultural pedagogy. In addition to her academic work, she has taken on casual caregiving roles at local childcare centres, demonstrating interpersonal strengths and adaptability. She is currently seeking faculty opportunities focused on democratic engagement, youth participation, international relations, parliamentary democracy, the political history of South Asia, and cross-cultural studies.
